Blood Oranges
It’s blood orange season!! Blood oranges are one of those things that you just HAVE to get when you see them in the store before they are gone. One of my favorite ingredients to add into most desserts is citrus, any kind of orange specifically. The blood oranges work so well into each bite of the sugar cookie. If you cant find blood oranges in your store of if you want to make this recipe not in blood orange season (December-April) it would work just as well with a regular orange or any other citrus fruit you desire.
The Sugar Cookie
In this blood orange frosted sugar cookie recipe I added in some blood orange zest to give it a little more of a flavor pop. I LOVE adding orange zest to my recipes it really takes the flavor and aroma to another level. I also added some almond flour into this cookie dough to softened the cookies a little bit so it wasn’t so much of a crunch but more of a slightly pillowy bite. These blood orange cookies were a crowd pleaser in my house and I know they will be in your too!
Ingredients for Blood Orange Frosted Sugar Cookies
- Unsalted Butter
- Granulated Sugar
- Powdered Sugar
- Baking Powder
- Salt
- Vanilla Extract
- Blood Orange Zest
- Large Egg
- Almond Flour
- All Purpose Flour
- Fresh Squeezed Blood Orange Juice
- Powdered Sugar
How to make Blood Orange Frosted Sugar Cookies
- First, Cream together butter, sugars, salt, vanilla, egg and zest
- Gradually mix in flours
- Place in the fridge to cool
- Preheat oven to 350
- Roll out dough and cut each cookie
- Bake for 11 min
- Let cool completely before icing
- Mix together the icing ingredients
- Dip each cookie in the icing about 3-4 times
- Allow icing to harden
- Enjoy!

Blood Orange Frosted Sugar Cookies
Equipment
- Baking sheet
- Standing mixer Optional
Ingredients
Orange Sugar Cookie
- 1 cup unsalted butter softned
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- zest of 1 large orange
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup almond flour
- 2 cups all purpose flour
Blood Orange Icing
- 1/2 cup fresh squeezed blood orange juice
- 4 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Cream together butter, sugars, salt, vanilla, egg and zest
- Gradually mix in both flours until mixture comes together in a ball, do not over mix!
- Cover dough in plastic wrap and let chill in the fridge for 30 min
- Preheat oven to 350
- Allow dough to come to room temperature then roll on a floured surface about 1/4" thick
- Cut dough into desired shapes and place on a lined baking sheet
- Bake for 11 min until the edges are slightly browned
- Transfer to cooling rack and let cool completely before icing
- Dip the tops of each cookie into the icing and place back on the cooling rack letting the icing layer dry before dipping again (about 3-4 dips or until desired thickness of icing on each cookie)
- Enjoy!
